The growing market of active mature adults is not a niche.  It is the largest and fastest growing demographic in the world and will be for decades to come.  With that realization, many advertisers and brands as well as the entertainment industry, are creating content for us Masters Athletes.

Case in point is the new Netflix film called Nyad, a biopic based on author, journalist, and Hall of Fame long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad. At the age of 64, she became the first person to swim the 110-mile distance from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage.  The film is based on her autobiography, Find a Way.

In the Netflix movie, Nyad is played by four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and shows her four-year journey with her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll, portrayed by two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster.

This was Nyad’s fifth attempt at this swim and she completed it by undertaking a 53-hour journey through the dangerous open ocean that included overcoming not just sharks but poisonous jellyfish.

The story is even more compelling because of her age at the time of this swim and the fact that she was three decades removed from her competitive marathon swimming career.  However, she remained obsessed with completing the epic swim that always eluded her – the 110 mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the “Mount Everest” of swims.

Set to be released in select theaters on October 20, Nyad will stream on Netflix on November 3. The film will have its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
