That is when the 45th Annual World Masters Athletics Championships are being held from July 20 to August 1. It’s only fitting that this world-class sporting experience be held in Toronto for its 45th anniversary. Not only is Ontario’s beautiful capital city a mecca of culture, diversity, and entertainment, but it is also where the first World Masters Track and Field Championships was held back in 1975. Today, this life changing tournament has grown into a world class event that is held in different cities and countries every year. In 2020, the games are finally coming back to Canada where they originated over four decades ago. Athletes 35 years and older from around the world will converge on this eastern Canadian metropolis for 11 unforgettable days of track and field competitions, cross country races, road races, and road racewalks. Athletes from all ethnicities, races, cultures and spiritual backgrounds are welcome in this inclusive Masters event. There are six venues designated for the competitions including: Varsity Centre, York Lions Stadium, Toronto Island, Toronto Track and Field Centre, Centennial Park, and Downsview Park. All locations are conveniently located on the same subway route, making them easy to find and access. There are no qualifying standards required to participate. Athletes are welcome to compete and have fun. The yearly racing event attracts all mature athletic levels including elite fitness leaders and recreational runners. Competitors are grouped in five-year age categories. For the committee that hosts this event and athletes who come out to race against other older fitness addicts, these Games represent so much more than just winning a medal. They are about showing the world what older athletes can do, meeting new people, developing friendships with other like-minded adults, and leaving a legacy on the sport’s world. While this milestone adventure only two years away, it’s not too early to start planning and training for the big race.
